Diversity and Ethnicity

Introduction

The United States is made of  a rich and complex society.  There are many voices and cultures that come from countries around the world.  The U.S. has many generations that have evolved and changed.  As Americans we can embra                            ce our differences or many times revert back to why people came to America. Many were looking for the freedom to be themselves and not punished for their differences. Do not forget as an American you have freedom to make a choice. Even today countries do not have the freedom to make their own choices.  We can learn about our wonderful country the good and the bad.  This your time to make your own choices.  One thing to remember is even with all the difference we our still human beings and not so different as we might think. 

This guide offers a brief over view of how our society has looked for ways to be visible through groups and multi-cultures. These are just a few of the culture groups in the United States. 

Different Groups

Veterans - are Americans who have served in the military and are considered veterans after leaving active duty. Many today have been in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. For more in-depth overview about Veterans view the Research Starter located in Super Search.  Here is the direct link: Veterans

Disabled individuals -  Are persons who have mental or physical conditions which limits them in some capacity. Example: deaf, blind, paralyzed, etc.  In America disability rights movement  was started in the 1970s.  Research Starter  available in Super Search.

LGBTQ+ - is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning.  Groups of people connected by their life style or preferences of how they see themselves.  Research Starter - LGBTQ community available in Super Search.

AAPI -  Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders this group contains individuals who can trace their origins from the 50 countries on the Asia continent, plus from the Pacific Islands.  It is a multi-complex group of individuals who have different languages, cultures, and faiths. BIPOC - are Black and Indigenous People of Color. Historically POC - People of Color was cited in the 1796 Oxford dictionary.  BI - Black and Indigenous was added to include those of darker skin and Native American.  This group contains people who speak different languages, cultures, and faith.
