How to Prepare for a Tutoring Session

A guide for your students on preparing for tutoring appointments:

Tutoring Policies

  • Try to book the appropriate length for a session.
  • Check-in prior to your session so the most can be made from your time with us. You can check-in up to ten minutes before your session.
  • Be prepared to book more sessions after the initial session. Sometimes, there isn’t enough time in a single session to cover the entire assignment.
  • Be mindful of other students in the Writing Center.
  • Be respectful of our tutors and arrive for your session on time. If you are more than fifteen minutes late to a session, be prepared to reschedule.

Before the Session

  • Gather all necessary course materials relevant to your writing project (e.g., the syllabus, a rubric, professor’s comments, etc.).
  • Bring any progress you have made on the assignment (e.g., a first draft, brainstorming, final draft, etc.).
  • Prepare some questions in advance and write them down so you won’t forget them.
  • Be prepared to stay for the duration of your entire session.

During the Session

  • Be ready to interact with the tutors. They cannot just edit your writing for you.
  • Take notes and ask questions. The tutors are here to help you.
  • We do help with grammatical issues but will first focus on higher order concerns (e.g., clarity, meeting the assignment’s expectations, etc.).
  • Create a plan for what comes next. Are more sessions needed?
  • Book follow up sessions for lengthy assignments. Revising is key in writing.
  • Ask the tutors for handouts or resources that might be helpful for you.

Writing Center Mascot

This is Athena. You might spot pictures of her around the writing center as the unofficial mascot. Make sure to read her speech bubbles. They have great information!

About Athena:

Athena is more dog than cat in personality. However, she enjoys playing with bells and ribbons. She is also a native to the Houston area. Athena can always be counted on for a movie at the drive in, along with belly rubs.
